Dr Thomas Shackshaft

I am one of the Deputy Directors for TICC; this means that I work alongside Megan and Sam to co-ordinate the actions of our various committee roles, and ensure that things are moving in the right direction in preparation for our next conference.

I went to medical school in London and completed my Foundation Years in a small district general hospital in Suffolk. I spent my F3 and F4 years in Clinical Teaching Fellow posts in London and Bristol, which I absolutely loved! I clearly found the teaching life difficult to leave as I’m currently working in a split role, with 60% of my time as a GP Trainee in Bristol, and 40% of my time as a Clinical Teaching Fellow at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

There is not a particularly clear progression path for education, but I was lucky to meet a few other doctors in my F3/F4 who showed me that pursuing a split clinical training/teaching role was doable. It’s sometimes challenging balancing the commitments of two roles, but for me the ability to continue teaching means it’s worth it.
